Science Communicator – (option for an immediate start and multiple opportunities available so tell your friends too!)

Do you have a passion for communicating and excellent customer service skills? If so and you’re enthusiastic, have a keen interest in science, and love helping people, we want to hear from you!

Whilst having a background in science (perhaps through studies or experience) would be useful, it certainly isn’t a deal-breaker as your desire to learn is most important to us.

About Us

Xplore! Science Discovery Centre is a unique visitor attraction and educational charity welcoming public visitors as well as school groups. In 2020, we opened a brand-new science centre in the heart of Wrexham, which is full to the brim with science, exploration, and fun.

Our team are passionate, committed, customer service focused, and welcoming to all. We’re a flexible employer, able to facilitate a range of personal circumstances allowing a wider range of people to be involved in the important job of inspiring future scientists!

The Role – Science Communicator

As a Science Communicator you will be at the heart of everything we do at Xplore! You’ll enhance visitor experiences by providing excellent customer service, and using your communication skills to deliver exciting scripted shows. Reporting to our Education Officer, you’ll have the opportunity to build on your existing skills by educating families visiting our centre, visiting secondary schools to present planetarium shows, or maybe even creating a brand-new workshop covering biodiversity.

No two days will be the same, but your role will involve:

  • Working with school groups and community audiences, delivering scripted activities virtually, at our Discovery Centre, and sites (e.g., schools) across Mid and North Wales and North West England
  • Assisting visitors with enquiries e.g., explaining exhibits and the science behind them (following training)
  • Maintaining and monitoring the exhibits, ensuring the areas are clean, stocked, working and ready for the next visitor
  • Leading schools and independent groups on their visit, briefing groups on arrival and ensuring all their needs are met
  • Contributing to the development of programme materials (e.g., workshops, shows and activities)

Our Requirements – Science Communicator

We believe that confidence and subject knowledge can be built over time but showing initiative and wanting to give something a go will be second nature to you. You’ll also need to bring:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • A flexible approach to tasks and hours (able to work at least three weekdays per week)
  • Great team player approach
  • Keen interest in science, with a desire to learn
  • Ability to present ideas to a wide range of audiences (following training)

Due to the nature of this role, successful applicants will be subject to a DBS check.

Although not essential, a full driving licence would be highly desirable for travel when on outreach (visiting schools, etc.), as would having a background in science gained through experience or studies. The ability to speak Welsh would also be advantageous.

The Package

  • Permanent contract
  • Flexible working hours (to work around your commitments e.g., school pick-ups), although you will be required to work at least three weekdays
  • Pay rate in line with the Real Living Wage currently at £9.90 per hour, plus additional pay when on outreach (e.g., visiting schools)
  • Accrued holiday pay
  • Uniform provided
  • Career development opportunities

Shifts are allocated three weeks in advance and hours are matched to availability of individuals. No minimum hours are guaranteed at present.

PLEASE NOTE: By clicking apply on this site, you will automatically be redirected to the Wrexham Glyndŵr website, where you will be required to complete an online application.

All applications to be submitted online, and strictly no agency calls or agency CV submissions.
