Diesel Traction Maintenance Supervisor (Heritage rail vehicles)

Brilliant opportunity to keep a vital spark of British Heritage alight, with potential for career development to supervisory level.

Our Organisation

Based in the heart of Bury, we are the East Lancashire Railway, a lovingly restored heritage railway which journeys for twelve miles through picturesque scenery from Heywood in the East to Rawtenstall in the North.

The future is bright here at East Lancashire Railway. We have been resilient in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, and as demand begins to rise there is so much potential to be unlocked from our range of offerings, and as a non-profit making company any surplus is reinvested straight back into the restoration of our heritage traction and rolling stock.

The Role – Diesel Maintenance Supervisor

Reporting to the Head of Traction and Rolling Stock Engineering, as the Diesel Traction Maintenance Supervisor you will oversee the day to day running of the diesel traction department in line with the Safety Management System and departmental policies, ensuring that the diesel traction units are fit for purpose and adequately maintained, and fleet availability is sufficient to cater for the business needs.

You will plan traction requirements for operating year, ensuring planned maintenance activities are completed and defects are acted upon and recorded.

Our Requirements – Diesel Traction Maintenance Supervisor

  • Experience of working on diesel traction units and diesel engines, mechanical drive equipment and hydraulic systems
  • Able to follow written instructions, read and understand basic system schematics
  • A team player, with the ability to work autonomously using your own initiative

Although not essential, an NVQ Level 2 in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent would be highly advantageous, as would experience of working on heritage rail vehicles, although in-depth training will be provided.

The Package

  • Permanent contract
  • Starting salary of £25,648 rising to £27,466 after successful competition of probation period
  • Free travel on East Lancashire Light Railway services
  • Company pension scheme
  • Plenty of social activities
  • Potential opportunity for advancement to a supervisory role

You will be based at our site in Bury, working Monday to Friday 8am to 4:30pm with occasional weekend work required to ensure engineering coverage for special events.
